Canadian Experience Class: 10,000th successful applicant announced
CBIE welcomes the announcement (November 2, 2011) by Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) regarding the success of the Canadian Experience Class. This program, established in 2008, has just accepted its 10,000th permanent resident: Goomaral (Maral) Chukhalkhuu, originally from Mongolia, a graduate of Carleton University. For international graduates of Canada’s colleges, institutes and universities, CEC is a great pathway to immigration, and one that does not require leaving the country to make an application. “As a student, I fell in love with this country,” said Ms. Chukhalkhuu, a Small Business Account Manager at RBC. “I knew I wanted to stay here and become a part of this wonderful country and the CEC offered me that opportunity.”

CBIE President Visits Tripoli
On Tuesday October 11, the Honourable John Baird, Minister of Foreign Affairs, undertook a diplomatic mission to Tripoli, Libya to meet with the interim government. The mission included representatives of major Canadian corporations with business interests in Libya. CBIE’s President and CEO, Karen McBride, was one of the key members of the group, reflecting the importance of education as a foundational element in the overall bilateral relationship.
In Tripoli Karen held productive discussions with Dr. Taher Ben Taher, the new Director of Scholarships within the Ministry of Education, and his colleague Dr. MosbahTalbi. Since January 2010, CBIE has administered the Libyan-North American Scholarship Program, overseeing the welfare of 500 students in Canada and 2,000 in the United States.
Karen went to Libya to build a relationship with the transitional team. Dr. Taher Ben Taher indicated that the Ministry is fully supportive of continuing the relationship with CBIE, and remains committed to the goals and objectives of the program. CBIE was given every assurance that all eligible Libyan students in the program will be able to continue studying under the scholarship and, understanding the value of the program for the future of Libya, the Ministry has every expectation that they will later start nominating new students to participate in this initiative. CBIE is committed to continue taking steps to strengthen our developing relationship with the new Libyan government.
For more information on Minister Baird’s visit to Libya, please see the Government of Canada’s media release.
Thank you for your ongoing support of CBIE and our work in the Libyan-North American Scholarship Program.
