CCIEM established to coordinate marketing efforts

On June 29, CBIE, ACCC, AUCC, CAPS-I and Languages Canada signed an MOU establishing the Canadian Consortium for International Education Marketing (CCIEM).

The organizations have come together to contribute to a more strategic, coordinated approach to existing international marketing efforts in order to improve Canada’s visibility and results.

The Steering Committee is chaired by CBIE and comprises representatives of the five organizations. Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada (DFAIT), Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) and Council of Ministers of Education, Canada (CMEC) have been invited to participate in the Steering Committee in order to ensure the Consortium’s efforts are well coordinated with the initiatives of key stakeholders.

CBIE piloting PhD research series

Over the coming months, CBIE will be piloting a new research series comprised of short- and medium-length works by PhD students in international education at member universities and professionals of member colleges and universities pursuing advanced part-time or full-time studies in international education. Outstanding Master’s works will be considered. Through this series, CBIE hopes to provide a platform for doctoral students to profile their work, as well as a space to explore new lines of research in the discipline. CBIE will soon be contacting Education Departments across the country with a Call for Papers, but welcomes information from members who know of individuals who may wish to become involved. Write to Janine Knight-Grofe at jknight@cbie.ca

Board Strikes Membership Taskforce

Moving to strengthen CBIE’s relationship with our members, at their May meeting the board of directors struck a Membership Task Force. Terms of Reference include:

  • Member Definition: categories, benefits, obligations of members.
  • Membership Development: growing the membership.
  • Member Services: structuring a suite of member services responsive to expressed needs of practitioners and policy-makers, across a wide geographic sweep.

The Task Force is chaired by Dr. Bonnie Neuman, Vice-President of Student Services at Dalhousie University. Karen McBride makes presentation to the Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology

In June, CBIE was invited to make a presentation to the Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology. The Committee is reviewing access to post-secondary education and wishes to consider the international dimensions of access.

CBIE spoke on behalf of our members’ interests in two areas: international students in Canada and Canadians studying abroad on exchange. We made a series of recommendations designed to remove barriers and enhance access.

CBIE’s June 14 brief to the Senate Committee is available on our web site in the Media Room and here.

World of Learning: available online and in hard copy

CBIE’s latest research report, World of Learning: Canadian Post-Secondary Students and the Study Abroad Experience, supported by HRSDC, attracted attention from The Globe and Mail. In a May editorial (“Let’s take young Canadians to the world”), The Globe cited the study, expressing concern at the lack of international experience of most Canadian students and the urgent need to increase the opportunities – and support – available for study abroad through students’ home institutions’ programs – your programs. See http://cbie.ca/english/media_news_e.htm for the initial Globe article and the follow-on editorial.

CBIE thanks our members who participated in this study. The report is available at: http://cbie.ca/english/media_resources_reports_e.htm and a hardcopy can be ordered by filling in this order form.
