The development of intercultural awareness begins with self-knowledge
and from there moves on to knowledge of the other. In this workshop you
will participate in a series of activities that you can later adapt and
use with your own staff and students to promote learning about culture
- the beliefs and values that shape our attitudes, decisions, and actions.
Come to this workshop prepared to actively participate and learn! You
will leave with a complete series of handouts and a thorough bibliography
to get you started on your own cross-cultural and pre-departure training
events.

Foundations for Student Success: International Student Orientation - From
Design to Delivery (E)

Ricky Ramdhaney, University of Windsor
Orientation is more than just workshops and tours! A well planned and
responsive international student orientation program can decrease the
need for "one on one" student advising, foster greater campus
interest in internationalization, and provide a foundation for student
success. Facilitators will lead participants through the steps of planning
a successful orientation, including: designing for diversity, building
campus-wide support, core program content, pre-orientation and transition
services, student leadership/volunteers, and evaluation. Participants
will work in small groups with institutions of similar student demographics.

International Mobility "101" (E)
Presenters: Kate Jennings, Queen's University and colleagues
Designed for those who are new to the field of international mobility
and who have responsibility for advising students on study and/or work/internship
abroad opportunities, the workshop will focus on a variety of mobility
related topics which may include: program promotion; types of education
abroad programs; resources, services, and environment of the education
abroad office; pre-departure and re-entry programming; health and safety
issues, including health insurance; scholarships, awards, and financial
aid. This workshop will involve a variety of delivery methods (lecture,
small group work and case studies).

Supervisory Skills for New Managers (E)
Presenter: Michelle Szabo Suderman, University of British Columbia
An introductory level workshop targeted at new supervisors, this session
introduces key concepts related to supervision of staff in an international
education office. This interactive session will include discussion and
small group work. Learn more about key responsibilities of a supervisor,
building teams, performance management, cultural considerations, and things
every supervisor should know.
