How to be a cross-cultural communicator (E)

Presenter: Lorna Unger, Carleton University

The development of intercultural awareness begins with self-knowledge and from there moves on to knowledge of the other. In this workshop you will participate in a series of activities that you can later adapt and use with your own staff and students to promote learning about culture - the beliefs and values that shape our attitudes, decisions, and actions. Come to this workshop prepared to actively participate and learn! You will leave with a complete series of handouts and a thorough bibliography to get you started on your own cross-cultural and pre-departure training events.

Separate fee applies ($59).

Foundations for Student Success: International Student Orientation - From Design to Delivery (E)

Presenters: Allison Dunnet, University of British Columbia
Ricky Ramdhaney, University of Windsor

Orientation is more than just workshops and tours! A well planned and responsive international student orientation program can decrease the need for "one on one" student advising, foster greater campus interest in internationalization, and provide a foundation for student success. Facilitators will lead participants through the steps of planning a successful orientation, including: designing for diversity, building campus-wide support, core program content, pre-orientation and transition services, student leadership/volunteers, and evaluation. Participants will work in small groups with institutions of similar student demographics.

Separate fee applies ($59).
